So, what's it like over there… In Afghanistan?

So, what's it like over there... In Afghanistan?
The question I’m asked by every single person who learns I just came back from Afghanistan. Just like when dealing with the American political process, our corrupted Congress and Senate; the American Sheeple actually cares little of what “goes on over there”! If they did, we as a people would be united in protest against our Congress and Senate who have prolonged this war on behalf of the corporations that are running it…

You want to know the difference between the U.S. Armed Forces and private contracting companies (PMC)? The difference is the individual Airman, Sailor, Marine and Soldier is held accountable and face disciplinary consequences at the unit level under their respective chain of command via a long and storied, disciplinary process of accountability and professionalism that has made the American military the most elite fighting force in world history!

The individual civilian contractor working for a corporation that only cares about one thing (profits) is held to their respective company’s corporate code of ethics enforced in country through an incompetent and inadequate human resources (HR) department. For a lot of companies, supervisors and managers find their hands tied with little no recourse in dealing with subordinates at the unit level who violate rules and regulations putting lives at risk.

I as a supervisor/manager cannot discipline a subordinate with a proven track record of insubordination and incompetence to the point of putting others’ lives in danger. I have to rely on my HR department through the Program Manager (PM) and corporate back stateside to have said employee removed from the Area of Operation (AOR). I can personally attest that this bullshit process takes in excess of months! In the meantime, the employee is allowed to continue to work “business as usual” causing dissention amongst the ranks resulting in low morale, all the while continuing to be a safety and security risk! It’s fucking insane!!! Eventually supervisors and managers find themselves not giving a shit…

Two examples I personally had to deal with: Minor details changed for Operational Security (OPSEC), though the point and overall message will be true!

In a southern Afghan Province I led and managed a 40 member security team responsible for granting access to Local National (LN) Afghan males onto military installations. I had this one employee who was simply a fucking RETARD! He was computer illiterate, couldn’t write a sentence to save his life and just couldn’t grasp the “technical/electrical” aspects of the equipment we used that was a major part of our duties.

I had written this employee up multiple times and counseled him to no avail – My HR department lost every single piece of documentation I forwarded up. Well, one late evening I walk into one of our “closed/secured” areas and I have a heart-attack! LOL… This tool was giving a LN a tour of our closed area! The second I entered the facility I knew something wasn’t right. I called them both outside and asked what in the hell was going on. My subordinate told me he was showing the Afghan male our work stations and was going to allow him to use the telephone to call home. HIS HOME BEING THE LOCAL FUCKING VILLAGE WHERE TALIBAN LIVED!! This LN didn’t even have an ID! It was all just INSANE!!

Needless to say when I reported the security violation to the military I received an ass chewing like I’d never had from the commanding officer! The installation wasn’t really ever at risk due to the many levels one must pass through however; the act of brining an un-cleared, non U.S. Citizen into a closed/secured area and giving them a tour is pretty serious! Get this, I was asked by one of my local (on-site) mangers why I reported this to the military! LOL… Another fucking TOOL ASS RETARD!

The point here is I knew this employee couldn’t cut it. I knew this employee would put lives at risk! I documented time and time again every act of RETARDNESS this employee committed and every time HR didn’t act. I was left with my hands tied with no recourse other than to wait for the ticking time-bomb (him) to explode! In the end it took the Commanding Officer (CO) of the entire installation to request his removal. He was gone the next day – and the company only acted so fast on the CO’s request because they feared negative consequences to their contract awarded by the government. A complaint by a CO against the company to the Defense Contracting Management Agency (DCMA) is not a good thing. Loose a contract and you lose millions upon millions of dollars in profits! Their only motivation no matter how much they preach their bullshit “code of ethics/conduct”.

This second example really gets to me and I find myself thinking about it often. Again minor details changed for OPSEC reasons…

We were attacked often; one never knew when the attack would come and or who would be the unlucky few to find themselves in the path of flying bulle
